Reactive oxygen species increases carotenogenesis in the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma. Among metal ions (Mn^(++), Zn^(++), Cu^(++) and Fe^(+++)) related to the removal of reactive oxygen species, Fe^(+++) and Mn^(++) decreased the carotenoid production in P. rhodozyma. The weak oxygen radical scavengers (Zn^(++) and Cu^(++)) did not affect carotenogenesis of the yeast. The astaxanthin content in the yeast was significantly decreased at > 1 §·/L of FeCl©ý, and the growth of P. rhodozyma was poor at <0.1 §·/L of FeCl©ý. Therefore, media containing 0.1-1 §·/L of FeCl©ýare recommended for the production of astaxanthin from P. rhodozyma. Increased oxygen scavenging activity of Mn^(++) (0-10 §· MnS0©þ/L,) in the presence of succinate also decreased carotenoid production in the yeast.
